Cancun and the VISITAX – Who Needs to Pay the VISITAX?

When planning a trip to Cancun, you may be aware that there is a new mandatory tourist tax that came into effect in April 2021. This new fee is called visitax mexico and it’s also known as the VISITOR TAX or VISITOURIST TAX. It’s been a hotly debated issue with plenty of wrong information floating around the internet, so this article is intended to help clear up any confusion surrounding this new tax.

Who Needs To Pay The VISITAX?

The VISITAX is required for all visitors who stay in the state of Quintana Roo, including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Bacalar, and Isla Mujeres. This fee is collected by local municipalities and the state government to provide additional funds for tourism infrastructure projects in the area, as well as to support cultural attractions. It is a mandatory payment that all visitors must pay in order to enter the state of Quintana Roo, and proof of payment must be presented at airports or seaports upon arrival.

There are some exceptions to the VISITAX requirement, including diplomatic or consular personnel and passengers in transit who do not leave the airport or seaport. Regardless of whether you are exempt or not, it’s best to pay the VISITAX online before arriving in Cancun to ensure that you have all of the necessary documentation with you in case there are any issues upon arrival. You will receive a QR code after paying which you can save to your phone or print out and keep on hand for the duration of your visit.
