A Greener Demolition?
Few in the built environment defend uk demolition at the moment. It’s been widely accepted for some time now that knocking down and starting from scratch is the least sustainable way of constructing buildings. The process produces a staggering amount of carbon (in terms of both direct emissions and energy required to produce new materials), and it is responsible for a proportionately large share of the UK’s waste.
A rethink may be on the cards, however, with many a demolition company attempting to find ways to become greener. This can be achieved in some ways, including utilizing less carbon-intensive fuels for on-site machinery, finding new and innovative ways to reuse materials from demolished sites, and generally working harder to reduce the overall impact of their work.
Controlled Demolition Services: Ensuring Safety and Efficiency
Ultimately, while a rethink on demolition is long overdue, it’s not going to be possible for the construction industry to become fully green if it remains committed to destroying a significant number of existing buildings each year. The best we can do is to encourage and facilitate a shift towards refurbishment over demolition, and to ensure that where demolition is necessary it is carried out to a high standard with best practice considerations in mind.
